Five Mack Lyon Middle School students attended the first middle school forensic tournament of the year on Saturday, November 6 at Foothills High School in Henderson.

Autumn Boren and Joe Garber chose an Humorous Interpretation in the duo format. Their delightful interpretation of a grief-stricken owner (Joe) of a pet fish making burial plans with an uncaring pet funeral director (Autumn) earned them first place!

Jessica Abbott chose to showcase her expository speech. She wrote and memorized an original speech about mythological creatures and designed visual aids to accompany it. Jessica took fourth place in the individual events category.

Both Katie Hendrix and Garrett O’Toole participated in two events. They both debated in the Public Forum event with partners. Also, Katie presented an expository speech on poisonous frogs. Garrett’s partner for a humorous duo was unexpectedly unable to attend. So Joe Garber offered to fill in as his duo partner.

“None of us could believe that Joe had memorized the entire piece since he only heard it being rehearsed a few times!” said Lyon Forensics teacher Beverly Bradley. “However, Joe did a flawless job, allowing Garrett to participate.”

The next tournament is scheduled at Roy Martin Middle School on January 8, 2011.
