The LDS Family History Center held the first workshop in its World Tour series on Wednesday Jan. 5 at the LDS Stake Center. The series of workshop will feature family historian, Kaylene Canfield, teaching and demonstrating how to best research and find relatives from around the world.
The geneology services at the center are free to the public and all are welcome. Canfield said that it’s best, though if you have a few names to start with.
The workshop is held every Wednesday at 7 p.m. Each month will be dedicated to a different country, this month will be focused on England.
According to Canfield, every country has a different way of keeping records. Civil records are sometimes set up differently than church records, she said. Some area titles such as county, or province can be confusing and difficult to decipher but she said that she is there to educate and guide people through what can be very time consuming.
“The older handwriting can look upside down at times, even though most of it is much prettier than modern day handwriting,” said Canfield. “Most of us were named after something or for something, and I can show people what to look for while they are searching.”
“Geneology is a lot of work and takes time and patience,” Canfield said, “but it is very addicting.”
This months country is England. The month of February is focused on Italy. March will be Ireland. And April will feature France.
The Wednesday night workshops are all held in The Family History Center near the west entrance of the LDS Stake Center on St. Joseph St. in Logandale.
