Eighteen-year-old Calvin McMurray of Logandale was named last week as Nevada’s outstanding Eagle Scout of the Year for 2011-2012 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
Local VFW Post 8336 presented McMurray with a $100 check and a plaque during a ceremony last Thursday in the Old Logandale School. Because of the honor, which also includes a local award, McMurray will be entered in the national VFW outstanding scout contest in which he could win $5,000.
“Calvin is an excellent example of what scouting is all about,” Charlie Jamison, Post 8336 commander, said during the award presentation.
Ralph Healy, VFW scouting committee chairman and senior vice commander for Post 8336, last year urged McMurray to submit the extensive application.
“It’s quite a big deal that a kid from Logandale wins the state award,” Healy said. “The competition across Nevada was pretty stiff. I think he may have a good chance at winning on the national level.”
“I’m very proud to have been part of this event and honored that I was selected,” McMurray said. “I really want to thank the scout leaders who helped me get where I am.”
“It’s awesome,” said Scout Master Matt Stankosky of Logandale Troop 26. “The award couldn’t have gone to a better person and more deserving scout.”
“We’re very proud of Calvin and the example he’s set for his younger siblings,” said mom Maggie McMurray.
Dad Sean McMurray agreed adding, “We’re grateful to the VFW for a program like this to support the scouting program.”
McMurray’s parents pointed to his many hours of community service and his Eagle Scout project constructing a block wall at the Clark County Fairgrounds as contributing factors to his state honor.
