Students at Moapa Valley High School celebrated M Week last week with a number of creative dress-up days at school and plenty of after-school activities in the evenings.

Monday opened the week with high-schoolers showing off their favorite sport team attire in a Sports Day. That night, students got together on the MVHS baseball field to have a movie night. Armed with picnic blankets and lawn chairs, students arrived and filled the baseball diamond to watch ‘Wreck-It Ralph’.

On Tuesday, the annual Mr. M competition was held. This year’s contestants included Justin Boren, Hailen Crawford, Pace Maughan, and Sean McConnell. They each performed for the honorary title.

MC’s of the show, Garrett Jacobsmeyer and Malissa Otero, introduced the four competitors in fashion show style before the student body and the five teacher judges: Brent May, Sidney Bounds, Matt Messer, Jeff Keel, and Kim Hardy.

Then each contestant was brought out one by one to be asked interview questions. Each competitor received a different set of amusing questions, ranging from “What do you want to be when you grow up?” to “What kind of clothing would you model and why?”

Hailen Crawford is crowned as the 2013 Mr. M by MVHS teacher and contest judge Sidney Bounds.

The final portion of the competition was the talent segment. Each of the contestants prepared a humorous talent to try to win over the crowd and the judges for the last time. Boren opened the talent segment by re-creating a dance scene from the movie ‘Napoleon Dynamite’. McConnell performed a dance of his own. Maughan performed a magic act, to the pleasure of the crowd. Crawford showed off his talent of juggling.

Finally Mr. Bounds and Ms. Hardy approached the stage to name the winner. The runners-up were Justin Boren, Sean McConnell, and Pace Maughan leaving Hailen Crawford as the winner of the Mr. M title for 2013.

Thursday was the last day of the school week and the day of the Senior Talent Show. Katie Qualheim and Garrett Jacobsmeyer again served as MCs and provided comic relief skits throughout the show.

Coralyne Stevens opened the show singing her take on Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You”. She was followed by an amusing dance where a number of senior girls danced in the dark wearing glow sticks which made them look like stick people. They called themselves the Sticksy Chicks.

After that, Ryan Leachman performed a rap song. Sammy Webber took the stage, singing and playing the guitar. Danielle Pray and Kenzie Harris then sang a duet from the broadway play, Wicked. Danielle Ricardo did an amusing performance, playing 80’s hits on a stylophone. Kaden Kelson and Kenzie Harris then sang a duet.

To end the show, Student Body President, Kaden Kelson, gave a speech to his classmates and played a video that he had created on the subject of good leaders.

The show, and M Week, then came to a close for another year.
