All kinds of superheroes could be seen flying around the Overton library on Friday afternoon as librarians held the second week of the Summer Reading Program.

The main goal of the program is to encourage kids to read over the summer. The fun weekly programs aim to encourage kids to keep on track with their summer reading logs.

This week, the superhero theme continued when the participating children got to run a superhero obstacle course to ‘test their superhero powers’. The first obstacle was pool noodle hurdle course where foam pool noodles were shaped into half circles and taped to the ground for the kids to jump over. Next, the kids crawled through a collapsible tunnel that led to four “Gamma radiation filled” noodles forming an alley that the kids had to walk through to reach the next stage. After the main course, the kids got to test their aim and super strength by throwing noodles through hoolahoops of varying heights and distances.

After all the kids had gotten a chance to go through the course a few times, they all gathered in the library for a few superhero stories. The first book involved super powers themselves, but the second featured the very important aspect of the superhero wardrobe, namely: superhero underwear.
All the while, librarians Maggie McMurray and Naomi Harris quizzed the kids about superhero trivia and facts.

After the stories, the kids got to ramp up their own superhero costumes by creating their very own superhero masks while the librarians held another raffle for the kids to pick up some superhero themed toys.

“[The Summer Reading Program] is really fun,” says Savanah Allum, a local long time participant. “It’s a great way to get kids to read. I really like the librarians, and the activities are really fun.”

Jessica Wrzesinski is a Summer Reading parent. She said, “I come every week, and I love it so far. More importantly, my daughter loves it, it’s how I wake her up on Friday mornings. I look forward to it every week and for future years.”

The Summer Reading Program is more than just the regular programs though. This Thursday the Fratello Marionettes are visiting to Moapa Town library to put on a show that the kids are sure to love.

The regular Friday activity is still on for 11:15 with the program focusing on superhero sidekicks.
If these two programs weren’t enough, the Overton library will also be holding a story telling event on Saturday at the community center.
