LETTER: MVCEAB Must Be Hitting The Mark

WhooooDoggie, we must be digging where there’s taters!

That has been my thought since I read what transpired at the recent Moapa Valley Community Education Advisory Board (MVCEAB) Meeting where Clark County School District Trustee Chris Garvey brought forth the revelation that there is no such thing as our MVCEAB. My second and enduring thought was HOW COULD THIS BE SO, why did I never hear of it?!

The very first meeting held on January 5, 2001, a group consisting of representatives of each local school (PERKINS- Randy Drabmen, BOWLER- Dave Wilson, Stephanie Mattson, LYON MS – Katy Christensen, MVHS- Dennis Reese) and five amazing, wonderful and interested parents (Jan Mecham, Joyce Lyon, Carolyn Jensen, Micki PeQueen , and myself) put our heads and hearts together and began the MVCEAB. And, I must exclaim, under the guidelines and continuing tutelage of CCSD and with much appreciation from our CCSD Trustee Ruth Johnson. And I also must say all the while, attending many meetings and classes with Trustee Johnson at the CCSD offices as she worked diligently to have CEAB be the method to be an effective communication between CCSD and Parents.

At any rate, our MVCEAB was treated as a model and Trustee Johnson expressed her appreciation to us numerous times throughout her career.

As late as 2006, during the many CCSD Meetings, and noticing that the CEAB concept was hitting home in the rural areas of the District, it became a thought to create a RURAL CEAB as it was clear that our issues were very aligned. BIG SURPRISE, with a massive school district that so very many schools were geographically distant from Las Vegas, have extremely different issues from City Schools.

The list of events that further confuse me is much too long to list here, so I will not bother.
This recent act from Trustee Garvey will certainly make our advisory group, whatever they call themselves, stronger and hopefully infuse the group with many more focused deeply committed community members.

My sincere appreciation and admiration to all those parents who kept this group together, understanding that if you keep working, we are bound to make effective change.

Chris Green
