Free Smoke Alarm Project Looking For Local Volunteers

Moapa Valley Progress

Residents of Moapa town may have noticed colorful door hanger signs that were distributed throughout their neighborhoods last week. Local volunteers worked side by side to distribute the hangers throughout the town, notifying residents of free smoke detectors donated by the American Red Cross. The smoke detectors will be installed in October by local volunteers trained by the Red Cross.

Spearheaded by volunteer firefighter MaryLou Skaggs of Overton, and coordinated through the community service website JustServe.org, this program is completely free to residents. To participate, Moapa residents must follow the instructions on the door hangers to register as soon as possible. The instructions are simple: just call 702-397-FIRE and leave your name and number.

Since the door hangers were distributed, project organizers say they have seen a very slow response from Moapa residents requesting the smoke alarms. Despite the fact that the units will not be installed until October, residents should call and register for the service as soon as possible. This allows time for various logistics to be put into place, organizers said.

For those that respond, volunteers will be in contact soon by phone to gather required information in preparation for the October installation.

Volunteers are now needed to participate in the community call center that will be making those calls. Beginning on August 15, during weekday evening time slots, Moapa Valley community members will sit side-by-side in an effort reminiscent of old-fashioned telethons. They will return calls and complete a simple questionnaire for residents of Moapa who have responded that they are in need of the smoke detector service.

The Overton Fire Station #74 is donating space for the call center. Phone logistics and service are being donated by Moapa Valley Telephone Company.

Volunteers can register for a time slot at the call center by visiting justserve.org. Simply search for projects using a local Moapa Valley zip code.

The call center service project is Phase II of the smoke detector installation effort, which is all part of a multi-state “Fall into Service” initiative taking place in October.

Moapa town is the first area of the project. Free smoke detectors will eventually be offered to all residents of Overton and Logandale as well in 2017, with this multi-phase process repeated.

JustServe.org is a free service that matches volunteers with local community service opportunities. Community members can register on the site as a volunteer. Local individuals and groups may also submit service projects online at justserve.org.
