The Moapa Valley Art Guild held a drawing class featuring local artist and teacher, Max Bunnell, at the Old Logandale School on Thursday, January 17. Bunnell who has spent over 51-years teaching art in Nevada and Utah was teaching the basics of pencil drawing to the class.
Bunnell, a graduate of Brigham Young University taught at Moapa Valley High School until he retired from the Clark County School District.
Bunnell then took up a second career when he went to teach art at Dixie College in St. George, Utah. Now retired from full-time teaching, Bunnell lives in Overton and teaches classes in the art room of the Old Logandale School for the Moapa Valley Art Guild.
Thursday’s class was filled to capacity and Bunnell, despite his years, was in energetic form. Bunnell worked his drawings under the large slanted mirror in the art room casually throwing his pencils and kneadable eraser around the table as he worked and displayed for the class the technique that has made him a beloved teacher to generations.
Despite Bunnell’s mastery of drawing, he encouraged the students not just to copy what he did and how he did it. “You all need to find your own style,” Bunnell said, “and work in the way you are comfortable.”
