Principal Rod Adams spoke to the audience stating that Mack Lyon Middle School was not only a great school but a “great place to work”. Adams recognized the students for their many accomplishments over the past year. “These are outstanding students doing outstanding things, I know these students will move on to do great things,” he said.
Student Council Advisor, Gary Leonard spoke about a year of firsts, with new administration and his own first year as advisor. Leonard recognized this year’s Student Council, President Pedro Gomez, VP Hanna Leavitt, Activities Chair Amanda Campbell, Secretary Lindsay Ozaki, Treasurer Sydney Widdison, and representatives Austin Prisbrey, John Cook and Thomas Evans. National Junior Honor Society Advisor Jared Meyer then recognized the 13 outgoing members of the NJHS and commended them on their 280 plus hours of community service. “I look forward to a new year with my new members,” he said. Commander Dennis Vance and Chaplain David Fox of the American Legion Diamond Jubilee Post 75 then presented the American Legion Awards to two students chosen by the school for exemplifying characteristics such as honor and courage. This award was presented to John Cook and Ali Karvonen. School Counselor Kim Delgadillo then presented the Presidential Awards, Silver and Gold to students maintaining an outstanding grade point average throughout middle school. Students were presented with certificates and letters from President Barack Obama. Adams then recognized several students for earning straight “A’s” during the 8th grade as well as several students for earning straight “A’s” throughout their entire three years in middle school. Adams also presented the Excellence Awards to Jackson Mortenson and Tabitha Witskin for Academics, Skyler Hill and Summer Owens for Citizenship, Amanda Campbell and Austin Prisbrey for Leadership, Cody Gollahon and Savannah Houghtalen for Service, and Cassandra Goodman and Calvin O’Toole for Effort. The Grant M. Bowler Award was presented to Austin Prisbrey for his involvement in extracurricular activities as well as his accomplishments in academics. “This is a well rounded student,” stated Adams. Librarian Phyllis Leavitt presented a new award to Justin Boren for his outstanding accomplishments in reading this year. Boren earned 1,025 accelerated reader points this year. “That means Justin read 83 fat books,” stated Leavitt. Boren not only read the books he then took comprehension tests on each book scoring no less than 92% on each. “This is a school record,” stated Leavitt. Boren received a cash prize, a giant pencil and his picture will hang in the Library for years to come. Vice Principal Jaydel Wilson was next to present the attendance award to the students absent two or less days the entire year as well as the W. Mack Lyon Award to students voted on by fellow students. “This gives the students a voice,” he said. The two students chosen were John Cook and Tiffany Marshall for showing school spirit, good citizenship and helping others. Following the recognition of all students a slide show presentation prepared by the talented Cody Bosilivick was shown highlighting the past year and wishing the Class of 2013 the best of luck for the future. |
