Boy Scout Troop 231 held a flag retirement ceremony on Thursday, May 20. It took place at 6:00 PM in the Overton Wash.

Troop 231 Scoutmaster Scott Simper said, “It is a great privilege to be able to retire our countries emblem and we really enjoy doing it.”

Boy Scout Troop 231 performs this ceremony about once a year.

Boy Scouts from Troop 231 retire a flag in a ceremony held on Thursday, May 20 in the Overton Wash area.
This year, they retired nine flags and approximately forty people came to watch. As the flags burned, Trina Dalley played Taps on her trumpet.

“It’s a great honor to retire nine flags,” Cub Scout chairperson, Shanalee Simper commented. “We had a really good turnout here this year to witness the ceremony.”

The U.S. Flag Code states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning”.
