University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) is holding an information and registration session for the upcoming Fall 2010 Master Gardener class on Thursday, July 15, from 10-11 a.m. at the Cooperative Extension office in Logandale. The fall training classes begin on September 13 and will be held in Logandale via interactive video conference from Las Vegas from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, continuing through November 12.
The Master Gardener program is open to individuals of all gardening backgrounds. The focus of the program is on volunteeringsharing your gardening knowledge with the community. Students must be willing to commit to attending 15 hours of continuing education and volunteering 35 hours of service back to the program each year. The initial training includes 70 hours of horticultural instruction on sustainable desert gardening practices, including proper plant selection and care, disease and pest management and water-efficient gardening.
At the registration session UNCE staff will detail the training program requirements, volunteer commitment and Master Gardener community projects. A fee of $100 is due at end of orientation to cover the cost of books, other training materials and light refreshments; some partial scholarships are available to those needing them.
