The MVHS Encore Choir and Jazz Band travelled to Las Vegas to bring some holiday cheer to the residents of the Shade Tree Shelter in Las Vegas on Tuesday, December 7. The Shade Tree Shelter is a refuge for victims of domestic violence and their children.
The musical performance lasted about forty-five minutes. Encore and the Jazz Band each performed a set of Christmas and other songs.
“We are glad that we were able to provide community service, not only in our own community, but in Las Vegas as well,” said Tony Polzien, director of the MVHS bands.
Kaelynne Pendleton, director of the MVHS choral program, set up the event. This is the second year that the two groups have performed at the shelter.
“After we went last year the kids asked me to take them again,” Pendleton said.
She was unable to join her students at the shelter but throughout the day, she said that she had received various text messages from them relating their experiences while there.
Pendleton shared a few of the text messages.
Choir member, Cody Coburn wrote, “What a performance. The whole choir was crying and everybody in the shelter too. It was the best experience in the world and you made it possible for me. Thank you.”
“I was so excited to receive those messages,” Pendleton said. “I’m really proud of everyone and I wish I could have been there.”
The MVHS Student Council collected items such as clothing and toys for the musical groups to deliver to the shelter during the visit.
“Although we gave to them, they gave our kids an experience that will remain with them for the rest of their lives,” Pendleton said.
