Members of the Moapa Valley FFA traveled to Elko earlier this month to compete at the state range and homesite soils contest. The competition, held on October 6, brought nine different FFA chapters from across the state. Moapa Valley continued its longstanding tradition of dominated the competition once again this year.
In homesite, Moapa Valley FFA members brought home the win with over 400 accumulated points. Individually Emm Smedley placed first, Brynne McMurray second, and Bailey Kesl third. Riley Fulmer was fifth.
In land judging Whitney Wickersham won first, followed by Brynne McMurray and Riley Fulmer in second and third respectively.
Moapa Valley also took first place as a team. “There were four pits and they were more challenging than last year,” Fulmer stated, “We learned a lot of interesting techniques from soil researchers who judged the contest.”
In addition to the plaques and pins the team members will receive at the state convention in March, the Moapa Valley soils and homesite teams also earned a qualification to compete at the national soils contest to be held in Oklahoma City in May.
“I’m proud of the students for putting in the time to practice and memorize because they have a lot of other activities,” said FFA Advisor Denise O’Toole. “Their hard work paid off and I look forward to nationals.”
