Kids at the Grant Bowler Elementary School exercised their brains during the Mathletics and Science Bowl last week. The Science Bowl occurred on Thursday May, 18 and it was the third year it has been done.

Bowler 5th grade teacher Carolyn Delafrance directed the friendly competition. She said that every student gets to participate. The students were given a packet in advance with all of the questions and answers on it to study. It had a myriad of science questions including physical science, chemistry, biology, earth, and life sciences.

Mathletics was new to the school this year and the students were excited about participating. It was directed by 5th grade teacher Mike Demers who is also new to the school this year.
“The school has other competitions like the Spelling B and Science Bowl,” Demers said. “The mathematics competition gives the kids an incentive to study hard at the end of the year.”
Demers handed out a test to all of the 5th grade students and placed the top 64 kids into 16 teams of 4 students.

On Tuesday May 16 all the teams had a chance compete and see who could answer math questions the quickest and most accurately. The teams that won the first round were Quizomatics, The Fraction Fries, Meep, The Destroyers, Fire Chicks, The Problem Solvers, The Bedazzled, and the Quizomatics. They answered questions taken from the NVAC Standards.

According to Demers the material was all things that students had learned throughout the year including, problem solving, geometry, graphs, multiplication of decibels, and converting fractions.
In the second round the team that answered the first question correctly won. In that round the Meep’s, Destroyers, Quizomatics, and Problem Solvers won.

The Third round was championed by Meep and the Problem Solvers.
Following that round the students had to get back to their classrooms to go home for the day. So the final championship round occurred on Thursday prior to the Science Bowl.

The Problem Solvers took first place followed by Meep, and third went to Quizomatics. The Problem Solvers group consisted of Shayden Jenson, Kael Freeman, Robbie Lewis, and Lydia Campbell. Unfortunately, Lydia could not make it to the championship round due to illness.
“All of the students did a fantastic job,” Demers said. “I was surprised at how quickly they were able to get some of that stuff done. There were not easy questions and I’m pretty proud of them.”
