A LOOK BACK AT THIRTY YEARS OF THE PROGRESS…Three In A Row For Volleyball

This summer the PROGRESS is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The newspaper began operations in August of 1987 under the direction of its founder John Z. Robison. Since that time the PROGRESS has covered three decades of community issues, news stories, local businesses, youth sports, politics, elections, Moapa Valley personalities and much more.
In this an upcoming editions, we will highlight the PROGRESS’ role in the community. We will begin with its essential role in documenting the day-to-day goings-on in the Moapa Valley communities. We have selected some of the more interesting stories which have appeared in our pages in past editions. We reach back into our archives, both recent and more distant, and look for stories that still present similar issues today. In the process, we no doubt will find that while some things in the community have changed drastically, much has remained, more or less, the same.
So keep an eye out for the PROGRESS over the next few weeks. There will be plenty to look back on; and plenty to look forward to.

Editor’s Note: The following story was published on the front page of the PROGRESS during the week of November 17-23, 1993.

Left to right, back row, Raegan Jones, Jennie Sutton; middle – Laura Lyn Dalley, Kristen Palmer, Kristie Dalley, Sandy Terry; front – Amy Adams, Vicki Evans, Hillari Keel, Genna Dalley, Michelle Booth.

They call it “threepeat.” So the Chicago Bulls have nothing over the Moapa Valley Volleyball team because the Pirates just took it’s third state Volleyball championship.
At the beginning of the season, after the Payson tournament, Coach Rod Adams thought the Pirate volleyball ship was sailing rather unsteadily, and he was ready to keel-haul some girls. But after many drills and training serious and long hours of demanding practice, the lady Pirates started to come together.
First, they won top honors at the Hurricane tournament. Then they went undefeated against non-conference foes. Large schools such as Cedar City, St. George, Cimmaron fell victim to the Pirate sword. Then they defeated all opponents in the league, took the Division III tournament, defeating White Pine for the fourth time, and finally captured the State Volleyball Crown by going undefeated in state tournament play and defeating White Pine again for the sixth time, and then capturing, for the third time, the state championship.
Kristie Dalley, Kristin Palmer, and Michelle Booth were chosen to the all state tournament team, and Kristie Dalley was chosen Most Valuable Player for the tournament.
Overall the Pirates have had an exceptional year and maybe we can have a fourpeat.
