The Virgin Valley Artists Association held an open house on Thursday to present awards to winning participants of the group’s monthly exhibition and competition. The Mesquite Fine Arts Center exhibit, sponsored by Eureka Casino, was themed ‘Natures Wonders’.
“This month was one of the biggest exhibits we have had this year,” said VVAA Vice President, Karen Miskimins. “The artwork was extremely high quality. It shows the diversity of Mesquite and the continued growth we are having.”

Miskimins presented the ribbons and cash prizes to the winners during the reception.
Winning Sponsor’s Choice and Best in Show was Lance Barr.People’s Choice went to Shirley Smith. First place was awarded to Walt Alder, second place to Sandra Anderson, and third place to Ray Pittman. Honorable Mention winners were: Floyd Johnson, Rita Fulmer, A. Kathleen Snow, and Steve Dudrow.

Miskimins is also Artist of the Month for August as well. She said she didn’t get involved in art until after retiring from her career and moving to Mesquite, after which she took on the art of pottery.
“Pottery was one of those things I just always wanted to try,” said Miskimins. “When I moved here to Mesquite I wanted to find a studio to learn. When I did, I and a friend of mine signed up for classes and I really loved it. I prefer hand building over using the wheel, but I do both.”

The VVAA has local members as well as some from other States. They encourage artists and supporters from other communities to join to share their talent and support the rich culture, said Miskimins.

In September, the VVAA Invitational Exhibition will take place from Sept 4 – Sept 30. It’s an exhibition of various art groups in surrounding areas displaying their work at Mesquite Fine Arts Center.
