The Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program at Moapa Valley High School held a fundraiser on Tuesday, Feb. 13. The event was called the “Sweetheart Dinner” and was a special catered meal for Valentine’s Day.

Days leading up to the event, the JAG students pre-sold over 130 tickets to parents, friends and family members for this dinner. Diners could opt for either take-out or eating in. The event caterer was Kits Kitchen in Las Vegas preparing a choice of salmon, BBQ ribs or cheese ravioli with garlic mashed potato, vegetable and two different choices of salad. The students made the dessert with a choice of cherry cobbler a la mode or red velvet cake.

The event took place in an elegantly decorated Old Overton Gym from 5:30pm-7:30pm. Diners were served by JAG students who were well dressed and courteous in their presentation.
“This event was really good for us,” Mitchell Smith, president of the local JAG chapter said. “In addition to raising funds, we were also able to learn how to give good customer service plus we got to raise funds for our field trips and end of year trip.”

The students raised about $1,300 in funding from the event. “This event went pretty darn well,” said JAG teacher Tammi Archibald. “The people attending just loved the food and the decorations were nice. All the students had a job to do and it was well organized.”

JAG is a state-based high school program meant to promote employment choices and prepare kids for college and the workforce. The students learn interviewing skills, dress for success techniques and resume building tips. They also take field trips to colleges and workplaces to learn what options are available after they graduate.

The students also plan an end of year trip, a vacation that they look forward to at the finish of the school year. The fundraiser was held to help support the local chapter’s field trips and year-end excursion.
