A popular Moapa Valley High School tradition since 2007, the Senior Sunrise Breakfast was introduced by student council member Jennifer Jack and student body president, Nick Delafrance.

This unique event has the senior class and any foreign exchange students for the school year gather at the football field to enjoy breakfast and time together as they watch the sun rise over the mesa. This year’s senior class held the Sunrise Breakfast on Friday, August 17.

Is 5:45AM a time teenagers typically enjoy? Ask any one of them and the answer is usually, no. However, when it comes to your last year of high school, the students tend to get a little nostalgic.
“It’s a good way to celebrate our Pirate pride and a great way to begin the end of our high school career,” said Alyson Leavitt of the breakfast.

The students were greeted by MVHS teacher Charlie Cooper. Coop, as the students like to call him, had tables set up with pastries, muffins and various drinks.
“All the makings of a healthy breakfast,” Cooper said. “I don’t choose the menu, the student council tells me what to get and that’s what goes on the table.”

A few of the teens literally rolled out of bed and came to the breakfast, still in their pajamas. Usually the kids lay out their blankets on the grass and watch the sunrise from the soft football stadium turf. But this year the memo didn’t make it to the right people and the irrigation sprinklers joined the party too.

So, in true teen fashion, the kids found an alternative. The bleachers made for an unobstructed view of the natural morning wonder.
“This is a great tradition to continue the camaraderie and friendships that have developed through the years with this class” said MVHS Principal Hal Mortensen.

Many of the students expressed their desire to make the most of their senior year. Making memories that last has been the reoccurring theme of the morning. Congratulations class of 2019, make this the best year yet.
