What do we mean by “motivation”? The definition of the word connotes a degree of reason and logic and purpose. I’m not sure arming onesself and going in to shoot up a room full of one’s peers requires a lot of motivation.
A person who is only 24 years of age, with a life-long history of diagnosed depression, and the treatments that go along with it, together with the volatile outbursts and over-reactions to small setbacks, (as his associates and classmates are now mentioning), doesn’t rely on a lot of planned “motivation” to trigger a meltdown.
His mindset is singular: he thinks gaming is important, to the exclusion of real life. We all know “gamers”, and they are reasonable citizens with real lives of their very own, with jobs and families, etc. To this kid, (David Katz), gaming was everything. When he lost his position in the tournament, to him, he lost everything. That was his trigger. Boom!
My overriding perpetual question is this: How can we still be surprised by this and unprepared for this?
Katz fills all of the slots for a person who would do such a thing. The stereotype. White, age 18-32, mentally unprepared, overly weaponized, not properly medicated, and now suddenly sad.
The news reporters repeated “I can’t believe this has happened again” … again.
How many times will we stand by, while the law enforcement departments in our cities and towns claim ignorance and beg forgiveness? When will we hold them accountable to the reality that here, in the land of the free and the home of the brave, in all gatherings, (i.e football games, county fairs, tournaments and competitions, celebratory parades, etc., etc.), there is at least one person in ALL gatherings who could potentially “lose it”. Bang!
To me, every time there is not a “bang”, I’m surprised all over again.
