Anasazi District Offers New BSA Training To Local Leaders

The Anasazi District of the Las Vegas Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America will offer classroom training to fulfill a new training requirement for scouting volunteers. The training will be held during Scout Roundtable on Thursday, September 13 at the Logandale Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It will begin at 7:00 PM. All Scout leaders and Parents are invited.

“With the recent announcement that the LDS Church will end its sponsoring of Boy Scout units on December 31, 2020 this will be the last Youth Protection Training course volunteers to church sponsored units will be required to take,” said Anasazi District official Craig Fabbi. “Please join your fellow scouters in a training session that will include interaction with scouting professionals and an opportunity to ask questions about the direction the Boy Scouts of America is pursuing.”

In early February, the BSA introduced newly updated youth protection training that is required for all volunteers before October 1.

The updated mandatory training takes a little over an hour to complete. It is an online course requiring access. The training draws on research from experts and survivors in the field of child abuse and maltreatment. It delves into a spectrum of child abuse, including: bullying, neglect, exposure to violence, physical and emotional abuse, and child sexual abuse. Once completed, volunteers will not have to retake the training for two years.

“There is no substitute for hearing directly from experts who have spent their careers studying child predators and abusers. This is life-changing information,” said Michael Johnson, the BSA’s director of youth protection.

In addition to updated training, the BSA recently announced new policies including:
• As of January 1, 2018, no new leader can be registered without first completing youth protection training.

• Effective June 1, 2018, adults accompanying a Scouting unit who are present at the activity for 72 total hours or more must be registered as a leader, including completion of a criminal background check and Youth Protection Training. The 72 hours need not be consecutive.
