In the spirit of Thanksgiving unity, Mesquite locals and residents from surrounding areas have been invited to attend a community Thanksgiving dinner hosted by the City of Mesquite. The complimentary meal will be served from noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21 at the Mesquite Senior Center on 102 West Old Mill Road.
The annual tradition feeds over 1,500 residents from Mesquite, Bunkerville, and surrounding areas. “This meal is an opportunity to not only enjoy turkey, mashed potatoes, and all of the trimmings, but to also enjoy friends, neighbors, family, and other people in the community,” a City of Mesquite press release stated.
The meal is made possible by the generosity of businesses, organizations, and individuals in the community through the donation of time and treasure.
“In addition, there are age-appropriate volunteer opportunities available for individuals and whole families,” the release continued. “Volunteer time slots are in one-hour blocks.”
Those interested in volunteering at the event should contact Krissy Thornton at 702-346-5290 extension 4102, or by email at kthornton@mesquitenv.gov.
Those interested in making a monetary donation can also contact Thornton.
“The Senior Center is also accepting in-kind donations,” the release stated. “Unfortunately, the Senior Center cannot accept store-bought items. All in-kind donations must be purchased through properly licensed commercial food vendors, e.g. Sysco, US Foods.”
Items needed for the meal include turkey, turkey gravy, yams, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, dinner rolls, and more. Non-food items include foil pans, pie plates, five-compartment trays, eight-ounce Styrofoam cups, and more.
Those interested in making an in-kind donation can coordinate their donation with Senior Center Head Cook Leora Hillius at 702-346-5290 extension 4104, or by email at lhillius@mesquitenv.gov.
“It is only with your help that this annual event is possible,” the release stated. “A big thank you to the numerous local businesses, individuals, and organizations who donate so much. Together we are making a difference in people’s lives.”
