The Grant M. Bowler Elementary School fifth grade presented America, a Patriotic Program on Thursday and Friday last week. Parents gathered in the school cafeteria to watch their students in this annual tradition.

As the program began, a hush came over the room and local Cub Scouts presented the colors. With hands on their hearts, the audience watched as the American flag and of Nevada state flag were carried into the room.

After the choir of fifth graders sang the “Star Spangled Banner,” the audience took their seats. They were treated to an enjoyable program in which the students sang about the states, their capitals, and the Presidents of the United States.

“I want the kids to appreciate their country,” said Bowler music teacher, Trish Andersen. “They need to know what they have. It’s important that they know their history.”
“I love teaching the students about their country,” Andersen added. “Through music, it’s easier for them to learn and remember.”

The students sang about Arlington National Cemetery and what it represents. There was also a slideshow presentation showing photos of current and previous United States military personnel.

During the slide show presentation, the children sang “Sacrifices Made.” The lyrics of this song were particularly moving: “You were young when duty called. All they wanted was your all. We remember today, all the sacrifices made. With your hand on your heart, you took the pledge to serve your country. Markers stand one by one, all in rows along the hillside. Sun is set. Day is done, for they paid the price with their lives.”

The color guard then called the room to order and retired the flags.
It was a wonderfully patriotic performance enjoyed by all in attendance.
