Local 4H, FFA Students Recognized For Essay Writing

Moapa Valley Progress

Local Ag students Shayla Wolfley (left) and Mackenzie Kephart (right) were recognized for award-winning essays at a Tractor Supply Company event held in Las Vegas earlier this month.

Tractor Supply Company honored local 4-H and FFA students on Saturday, November 10 at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Tractor Supply concluded their year-long “Follow Us to The Fair Tour” in Las Vegas by recognizing four youth from southern Nevada. Two of these youth were from Moapa Valley including Shayla Wolfley and Mackenzie Kephart.

Tractor Supply stopped at twenty-four fairs in twenty-four different states this year to recognize 4-H and FFA members who made an effort to be great neighbors in their communities. To apply for the award, students had to write a 500-word essay on why FFA or 4-H had given them the ability to be a great neighbor, and how their experiences in the youth programs will allow them to continue being great members in their communities.

The winners were hand-picked by Tractor Supply from over 500 applications. The winners were recognized at a ceremony in Las Vegas at the South Point Hotel and Casino inside the PBR Expo.

The winners were ushered onto the stage and given a chance to share their experience with FFA or 4-H. Each member shared what they wrote in their essay, and why FFA or 4-H was important to them.
“In my essay, I wrote about how FFA has given me experience in leadership and agriculture that I want to be able to share with everyone.” said Mackenzie Kephart. “FFA is an amazing opportunity that I love. FFA has made me a leader in so many ways.”

During the ceremony, Tractor Supply thanked all of the members for participating in their contest and congratulated them for their efforts in agriculture and being good community members.
“This country needs leaders in the future, and these kids are going to be just that,” a Tractor Supply representative said. “These students show what it takes to be leaders for the future, and Tractor Supply is proud to support 4-H and FFA.”

To thank the students, Tractor Supply presented each with gifts and plaques commemorating the event. The winners received a Tractor Supply backpack, an Ariat hat, a water bottle, a lunch bag, and a fifty-dollar gift card to Tractor Supply. The winners also received a special, extra surprise gift, two tickets to the PBR World Finals that night.

“This was a really cool experience,” explained Kephart. “FFA is always giving me cool opportunities like this one and this experience was definitely one of a kind. I feel proud knowing that my essay was one of the ones they chose out of 500 other kids.”
