The Moapa Valley Education Foundation (MVEF) awarded a check for $650.00 to Moapa Valley High School band teacher Kim Delgadillo on Monday, December 3. The money will go towards funding varsity letters and other awards for Pirate band members.

President Lindsey Dalley, along with MVEF board members Geniel Ozaki, Connie Robertson, and Larry Moses, presented the check during a school assembly in the Ron Dalley Theater. Other MVEF board members include Dr. Lance Robertson and Robin Ozaki.

Dalley prefaced the award with a discussion of the MV Education Foundation’s role in providing scholarships and other financial opportunities for students in Moapa Valley.
“What does it take to be a Pirate?” Dalley asked the audience. “It takes grit. It takes showing up. It takes caring about your crew on the ship.”
“There are some Pirates who are still on the ship, and they have some bounty for Mrs. Delgadillo, the leader of Pirate music,” Dalley added

In an onstage interview segment following the award, Student Body President Gannon Hanevold spoke with Delgadillo about her feelings regarding the award.
“It feels really good!” commented Delgadillo, who has been teaching in Moapa Valley for 35 years. “I appreciate the Education Foundation and my students who make it all possible.”

Lance Robertson, who serves as the vice president of the MV Education Foundation, explained that the goal of the organization is to have enough money to be able to provide classes, services, and other educational needs for Moapa Valley.
“That will take a few years, but that’s our goal: to help provide for schools what they cannot get through the school district itself,” said Robertson.

This check is the first “substantial contribution” made by the Foundation, explained Robertson. The MVEF works with local businesses, alumni donors, and “anyone else who is willing to donate money” to the organization. The nonprofit group provides and administers scholarships to MVHS seniors and is working to provide more future opportunities.

“We’re here to help,” said Connie Robertson, who also manages the College and Career Center at MVHS.
The Moapa Valley Education Foundation is certainly doing just that.
