The Tradition To Continue With Performance Of ‘Messiah’

By CATHERINE ELLERTON

Moapa Valley Progress

A community choir and orchestra under the direction of Logandale resident Gaye Nelson will celebrate the story of Christmas through a performance of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, December 16, at 7 p.m., at the Old Logandale School. This traditional and beloved oratorio has been performed at Christmas time for over seventy years in the Moapa Valley.

In 1741, George Frederic Handel captured the wonder, the joy, the apprehension, and the promise of the Messiah story as he wrote this major masterwork in only twenty-four days. The oratorio describes, in words and music, how the earth was enshrouded in darkness, but with the angels announcing the birth of the Christ Child, “the eyes of the blind would be opened” and the world would rejoice.

This is the season to remember and to rejoice, knowing that our King cometh unto us and our souls shall find rest.
Come and join the choir in re-living the story for it is within this musical adaptation that we shall find peace – Hallelujah!

This free concert is sponsored in part by Moapa Valley Performing Arts Council. Individual Partners for the Arts include Nevada Arts Council, America First Credit Union, Grant & Laurel Bushman, Moapa Valley Telephone Company, Moapa Valley Chamber of Commerce, and the Board of County Commissioners.
