CHRISTMAS PASTORAL MESSAGES: The Real Good News of Christmas

By WAYNE EVANS
New Hope Christian Church

I think we would all agree, good news is the best type of news. You find out you are getting a raise. A new grandchild is on the way. Perhaps an old friend makes a surprise visit. Unfortunately, good news is not the most common type of news we receive. It seems that most of what gets relayed to us is tragic, fake, or comes with an agenda.

On the night Jesus was born, the book of Luke tells the story of the first people to receive the news that Jesus was born in Bethlehem: A group of shepherds watching their flock at night. An angel appeared and starts the conversation with “Don’t be afraid!” An understandable greeting! Fear would likely be everyone’s reaction if an angel appeared to us. Then He delivers the message he’s come to share: “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people.”

There are a lot of voices vying for our attention around the holidays. A lot of messages being delivered to us. Most of them are financially motivated. Many others come to intentionally distract us from what this season is supposed to be about. The old expression “Jesus is the Reason for the Season” is true, yet somehow this time of the year keeps becoming less about Him and more about “stuff.”

This week, I encourage you to revisit the life of Jesus. Look into who He is and what He has to say. His entry into this world was introduced with “good news.” What is now available to you because of Him is good. It is positive, healthy, and true. His news is not fake and has no hidden agenda. The gifts He offers to you are peace and joy. You won’t find those items available for free 2-day shipping on Amazon.

The shepherds sitting in that dark field outside of Bethlehem were in need of some good news. No doubt you are as well. So let me share with you the best thing you will hear and receive this holiday season. Luke 2:11 “The Savior – yes, the Messiah, the Lord – has been born.”
