Community members gathered in the great hall at the Old Logandale School on Sunday, December 16 to share in the experience of Messiah by Georg Frederic Handel. As is long-held tradition, volunteer talent from the community had been rehearsing for many weeks to prepare for an amazingly beautiful holiday musical experience provided free for anyone to enjoy.

The orchestra was staffed with eight violinists, four cellists, two violas, and two flutists. Several other instruments, including a harpsichord, piano, wooden recorder, bass, oboe, bassoon, tympani, French horn, and trumpet rounded out the sound. The symphony orchestra consisted of middle school and high school students, and other community members of various ages.

Tenor Dr. Kent Bennion began the program. The beautiful opening phrase and clear tone achieved by Bennion set the mood for the concert.

The declaration of the conception of the Lord was proclaimed as Vicki Willard’s gentle, rich voice sang “Behold your God.”

Bruce Whitney’s baritone/bass voice chased away any darkness with his rendition of Numbers 10 and 11.

The Chorus: “And His Name Shall Be Called Wonderful” was the most moving piece of the evening. Every instrument was utilized and the powerful voices of the choir proclaimed declaration of the Messiah.

Soloist Jamie Burt provided the intensity required to be a heavenly voice telling the world of His birth.
Soprano Kristine Leach’s voice lent itself to her difficult, yet moving solo.

Doyle Raines’ deep bass, Catherine Ellerton’s clear vocals, and Rachel Garcia’s full sound carried their pieces into the hearts of the audience.
“I was seriously impressed with the talent in this little town,” said audience member Erin Francom. “They are true professionals, truly amazing.”

Director, Gaye Nelson did a remarkable job choosing the soloists and coaxing the talent from community members.

Is there a more perfect way to celebrate the Christmas season than to spend it with other community members enjoying Handel’s Messiah?
