USPS Warns Of Fraudulent Email

U.S. Postal Inspectors are warning postal customers to beware of fraudulent emails claiming to be from the Postal Service.

Postal customers have reported receiving fraudulent emails which refer to a package delivery which can’t be delivered or online postage charges which must be paid by the customer. Customers are instructed in the email to click on a link in the email, open an attachment or print a special label.
But Postal Inspectors warn: Don’t do it!

Following the email instructions can result in a malicious virus being installed to the customer’s computer. Like most viruses sent by email, clicking on the link or opening the attachment will activate the virus that can steal information—such as the customer’s user name, password, and financial account information.

Local USPS officials say that they have even heard reports from Moapa Valley customers who have received this email.
“The first thing that people need to remember is that the Post Office doesn’t send out emails to its customers,” said Logandale postmaster De Smith. “This fraudulent email is apparently pretty convincing. People say that it has the Post Office logo and looks very official. But people need to understand that an email like this isn’t coming from the Postal Service.”

What to do? Simply delete the message without taking any further action. The Postal Inspection Service is working hard to resolve the issue and shut down the malicious program.

In the meantime, if you have questions about a delivery or wish to report postal-related spam, please call 1-800-ASK-USPS or email spam@uspis.gov
