With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, love is in the air! Romantic relationships are already a complex subject matter, but they get even more so when they’re someone’s first dip into romance. High school relationships are a bit of a debatable topic, the real question being this: what level of investment should there be in these budding relationships?

According to the most recent Crow’s Nest poll, the majority of MVHS students, or 47%, say that dating should be kept casual.

“People should probably just stick to casual-dating,” said Payne Morrow, a junior. “I think people should be willing to live a little more [instead of] just sticking to one person the whole time they’re in high school.”

Sophomore Patricia Slaughter agreed with Morrow, adding, “I think that casual dating would be the best, mostly because it’s harder to have a serious relationship in high school!”

Slaughter acknowledged, “People’s relationships might succeed! I’m not saying they can’t…but it shouldn’t take up your whole life!”

Cassidy Jones has a slightly different opinion.

“I really think it just depends on the people,” said Jones, a senior. “I don’t think you should date someone just because you’re bored, because that’s really unfair for anyone involved. But as long as everyone’s on the same page, I think the kind of relationship doesn’t really matter.”

Jones explained that she could see a future with some of the guys she’s dated but that she doesn’t want to be unrealistic about the matter, either.

“I think you shouldn’t bet on it lasting forever, but you can dream!” elaborated Jones. “And, if it works, it works!”

Jones ultimately summed up the whole idea of dating in high school with this explanation: “I think if you really like someone, and it’s a mutual feeling, you should just do whatever you think is best for you!”

Whether you are among the casual daters, the 25% who like to steady-date, the 15% who just want to go to school dances, or the 13% who don’t want to date at all…Good luck!

And Happy Valentine’s Day!
