A special education group at Moapa Valley High School recently participated in a field trip to learn about local civil service jobs.
Their first stop was at the Overton post office to see all it takes to deliver the mail. The students, led by teacher Suzanne Garlick, got the unusual experience of standing behind the counter at the post office looking out. They learned the importance of being organized, so that the workers are able to find packages from off the shelves for the many postal customers.Students were able to watch the process of placing mail in the boxes. Some were shocked to find out how early the workers arrive at the office each morning to organize things for the day.
The next stop was the Metro Police Overton substation. Officer Mark Harding emphasized that if in trouble the best solution is to turn to an individual they can trust, including local authorities. He taught that people should not be afraid of police, but that they are there to serve and help the community. He also taught students about the parts of his uniform, equipment and gave a tour of his vehicle.
The final stop was at the Overton library. Librarian Naomi gave students a tour. She showed them all the things that community members can do at the library, including going on the computer, checking out movies and several different types of books.
Students went behind the counter and were shown how to scan in books and unlock movie cases.
The class was excited to see how things run behind the scenes and enjoyed the opportunity.
“I am so grateful to all those that were willing to give of their time to help show our students how they help and serve our community,” said Garlick. “Our students had a wonderful time and learned a lot.”
