Celebrating Signing Of 19th Amendment In Nevada

The Mesquite Women’s History and Culture Center (WHCC) will mark a significant date in Nevada history with a special community event on Friday, Feb. 7 at 2 pm in Mesquite City Hall. The WHCC will be staging a re-enactment of a historic photo depicting Nevada’s ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution which gave women the right to vote.

A century ago, then-Nevada Governor Emmett D. Boyle signed a resolution of ratification of the 19th Amendment in a special signing ceremony held Feb. 7, 1920 in Carson City.

Friday’s re-enactment will have Mesquite Mayor Al Litman filling in for Governor Boyle in doing the signing. WHCC Founder Jean Watkins will stand in the place of Mrs. Sadie D. Hurst who presented the resolution at the original ceremony.

The general public is invited to attend the re-enactment of that historic event. Attendees may choose to join in the re-enactment and even dress in 1920s vintage costumes. Or they can just come in modern-day attire and attend as spectators of this centennial celebration.

A brief biographical sketch of those in attendance at the 1920 signing ceremony will be on display at the event for the public to review.

WHCC Board member Carol Saldivar said that the event is a kick-off for a whole series of centennial events, hosted by the WHCC this year. The events aim to recognize and celebrate great women in history, she said.

“We look forward to sharing this special 1920 moment, re-enacted in 2020, with you, your family and friends,” Saldivar said.
