Ammo In Short Supply While CCW Applications Increase

By NICK YAMASHITA

The Progress

CCW instructor Shanan Kelly instructs a Thunderstick Tactics client on the use of a handgun.

“It will take a while,” stated Mark Hopkins, operator of Overton Ace Hardware.

That was his response to queries about how long it will be before the store has ammunition in stock again for certain calibers of firearms. Hopkins figures it might be around three years before he can keep stock on the shelf for 9 mm caliber.

A national shortage of ammunition, mostly 9 mm ammunition, has been plaguing firearm enthusiasts for some time. In looking for an explanation for the shortage, many have pointed to the current swing in government, and fears regarding stricter national firearm policies and regulations.

But even while ammunition has seen a shortage, applications for Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) permits have “shot” above the clouds.

Overton resident Shanan Kelly, who is a certified CCW instructor with his own company Thunderstick Tactics, answered a few questions on the shortage of ammunition and the vast increase in obtaining CCW Permits during an interview with the Progress last week.

Kelly said that there may be a number of factors leading to a shortage of ammunition. These could include mismanaged at ammo manufacturing companies, overbearing government regulation, the shutdown of material mines used to manufacture the ammunition and disruptions at processing facilities.

“We saw all of these as sources of shortage in 2020,” Kelly said. “But, I would say the uncertain times are the biggest factor in ammo and firearms shortages. When Americans are worried about the future, specifically political stability and the threats of oppression and violations to our 2nd Amendment rights, then gun owners stock up.”

Kelly said that the overheated presidential election along with widespread fears about the COVID pandemic, things have developed into a “perfect storm” for shortages in ammo, firearms and other key supplies.

Kelly recalls that in 2008, there was a shortage of .22 LR ammunition. This took months before the manufacturers could catch up with demand.
“Well, buckle up, this one is not only a politically-caused shortage, but it also has a ‘pandemic’ oozing from its pores,” said Kelly.

When asked about preparing oneself for emergencies involving self-defense and the use of a firearm, Kelly added some insight into the idea of preparedness.
“I heard a saying that went something like this, ‘The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago’,” Kelly said. “The second best time to plant a tree is today.”

Kelly said that a firearm represents a great equalizer in a violent encounter. “No matter the assailant’s size, a well-trained person can neutralize a deadly situation with a firearm in their hand,” he said.

But training in the use of the weapon is vital, he added.
“Obtaining a concealed carry permit is a great thing,” Kelly said. “But just having a permit is like having a driver’s license. It’s worthless if you don’t know how to drive. Obtaining proper training is essential!”

Thunder Stick Tactics offers up-to-date protection training courses in Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley. The company offer everything from basic handgun, rifle, shotgun, CCW courses to advanced tactical courses.

“Whether you use Thunder Stick Tactics or another quality shooting facility that teaches the most current shooting methods, training is essential,” Kelly said. “You want to make sure you are an asset and not a liability in a deadly force situation.”

Kelly said that the ammunition shortage is likely to continue. In addition, frustrations of 2nd Amendment supporters will continue to be heard. but you can still get the training and proper instruction to prepare for emergencies and even obtain your CCW.
