Local dogs and their owners were having a great time on Thursday, March 4 at the final session of a Dog Agility Training Series held at the Jimmy Hughes Campus in Mesquite over the past month. After five weeks of training the dogs and their owners were celebrating graduation day, complete with achievement awards.

Betty Hunt brought her dog Olive to class. She had good things to say about the series. “This class is good for everyone!” Hunt said. “The dogs love it, the class is good social time, good teachers and I even lost weight.”

It was amazing how well the dogs and owners performed after only five classes. They all went through a fun K-9 obstacle course nobly.

The class was taught by two local experts. Linda Beard is a certified dog trainer, and Janet Best is an agility instructor and former dog business owner . The two have joined together in a non-profit organization known as “Dog Lovers of Mesquite.” And they have also partnered with the City of Mesquite to offer these Dog Agility Training Classes.

The next set of classes will begin on March 18 located at the Jimmie Hughes Campus, 150 North Yucca Street in the courtyard behind the theater. Participants must pre-register for the program at the Mesquite Recreation Center.

There are several requirements for entry in the class. Dogs must be 6-months-old to be eligible for the class. No children under 15 years of age are permitted. Dog owners must be 18 years of age. No prong collars, head halters, retractable leashes, or chains (6’ leash only). All dogs must be current on all vaccinations. Bring records when registering for class.

Participants should bring water for themselves and their dog including a bowl. Dog owners should wear closed toed shoes. They should also bring plenty of training treats: small, soft, and smelly in a treat pouch or fanny pack.

Beard does offer private training sessions in clients’ homes as well. She teaches behavior training, manners, and obedience.
“I had such fun at a 5-day dog camp with my dog,” Best said. “I wanted to bring that fun to Mesquite dog owners.”

Dog owner Julene Ludsberg, that just finished the class with her dog said, “I give this class raving reviews.”

You can register for the Department of Athletics & Leisure programs online at www.mesuitenv.gov or in person at the recreation center. For more information on classes call 724-513-8259
