OLSHACS To Host String Of Community Events

By NICK YAMASHITA

The Progress

A series of events are taking place this weekend at the Old Logandale School. On Friday and Saturday, March 12-13, the Old Logandale School Historical and Cultural Society (OLSHACS) will kicking things off for the community at 10 am and going until 4 pm at the historic school building located at 3011 N Moapa Valley Blvd.

“We are ecstatic to have people come and see the history behind these communities here in Moapa Valley,” stated OLSHACS Director Robin Maughan. “Along with that, we will have the Moapa Art Guild Spring Show here at the same time too.”

Maughan explained that all the rooms at the facility will be open for visiting. This includes several new additions to the museum. For example, a telegraph from the Moapa Railroad Dept. will be on display.

The original Overton Beach road sign, from when the beach was closed, will be part of another exhibit. Also authentic furniture from St. Thomas will be available for people to see. And for the first time, visitors can take a brief look into a brand new display about the Yamashita family and the rich heritage of Asian American farmers within the Moapa Valley.

“We are excited for the Yamashita family display being put together!” said Maughan. “This is a huge historical side of the valley that we do not have as much information about. It will be a great addition to preserving the history of our valley.”

Besides the exhibits, the Moapa Valley Art Guild (MVAG)will be holding its annual Spring Art Show and sale. This annual event helps provide funds for the annual MVAG Art scholarship awards which go to MVHS graduates each year.

“We also have a drawing for a quilt,” Maughan said. “You get entry into the homemade quilt by adding a stitch and working on it. We will also be doing drawings for some artwork which are free to enter.”

When asked about the objectives of these events, Maughan replied, “Our purpose is to let people know what’s available here at the museum! We also want to preserve and save the history here, give different access to the valley in relation to the history of it, and just educate the people. We have so much history and neat stuff about this valley that needs to be known.”

These vents will be a celebration of life within this valley and the history behind it.
“We just hope people come and see the rich history and learn something new and cool,” Maughan said.
