Big Plans Being Made For VVHS 2021 Graduates

By VERNON ROBISON

The Progress

The Parade of Graduates held last year for the VVHS Class of 2020 was a huge success. This year, parent groups are planning a month’s worth of activities for the Class of 2021. And they are calling out to the community for donations to help make it a graduation to remember.

A group of Virgin Valley parents are working together to provide a fun and safe way for the Virgin Valley High School Class of 2021 to gather and celebrate in the final month of the school year. They have a whole lineup of activities planned including a community-wide parade celebration on the night of graduation itself.

“Our students have had to navigate this past year differently than any other class before them,” said Jodi Hughes, one of the coordinators of the VVHS graduation events. “It is like they have been shortchanged for most of their senior year and we wanted to make up the difference by celebrating them throughout the month of May!”

Because the schools are unable to host gatherings of students for extracurricular social activities, the parent group is planning and hosting a whole lineup of activities for the kids, Hughes said.

On April 30-May 1, a weekend of celebrating seniors will be held. Beginning on Friday night with a special dinner for seniors and their parents hosted by the Casablanca Resort, the weekend will then continue on Saturday night with a Senior Prom event.

On Saturday, May 8 there will be a special Cinco de Mayo celebration for the kids.

The traditional V-day observance will celebrate the VVHS alma mater with a fun flare on Fri.. May 14.

On May 22, the kids will enjoy a day at Aravada Springs resort. “That will be a day for seniors to come and play, swim and create memories to last a lifetime,” Hughes said. “We appreciate Denise Houston and Aravada Springs for hosting this event.”

That leads into the big Grad Night festivities on Thursday, May 27.

Early that evening a senior parade will wend its way through downtown Mesquite with each student decorating his/her own vehicle. The community is invited to turn out to Mesquite Blvd. and cheer the students on.

“We thank Karen Fielding for arranging this event for our seniors,” Hughes said.

Finally, a big Grad Night party will be hosted by the Mesquite Police Officers’ Association. This extravaganza will feature an evening filled with food, fun and memories, finished off with a drawing for door prizes for the seniors.

“We want our seniors to graduate and go out into the world knowing that the community of Mesquite loves them and has faith in their beautiful futures,” Hughes said.

But Hughes emphasized that the parents group needs help from both individual citizens and businesses in the community to make this month-long celebration a success.

“We are looking for donations from the community for sponsoring these events and for the door prizes being given out to the seniors at the Grad Night party,” Hughes said. “The community has been so generous in the past and we are hoping for that support again as we give the Class of 2021 the send-off they deserve.”
