The Studio B Dance Academy of Overton, Nevada, enjoyed some notable success lately.

The Studio B competitive team attended a regional dance competition in Las Vegas and brought home some awards and recognition. The dance competition, held on April 9-11 at the Santa Fe Station in Las Vegas, was managed and sponsored by Axis Dance Competition.

The local team coached by Brianna Waite and Taylor Asay performed in several categories of dance at the competition, bringing home a 2nd place finish in Hip Hop, a 4th place in Contemporary, and a 6th place in Jazz. This was the new team’s first ever competition.

“It was a huge accomplishment and something special for the community,” said Waite. “We are a small little town team and went in and competed against huge schools.”

The competition hosted 20 dance studios with 580 dance numbers performed over the 3-day event. There were three judges, each awarding up to 100 points. Also, due to current mandates each team (studio) had to come in block-scheduled times.

“It was a good experience,” said Studio B Dance team member Sierra Sanchez. “Everyone there was really nice. After you got off stage, everyone would congratulate you and make you feel good about what you did. We did very well on our bringing the hype on the dance moves and we were in sync.”

Most of the girls mentioned how great it was to have some very enthusiastic judges who were jamming out to their performances.
“They were fun and colorful judges,” exclaimed Assistant Coach Taylor Asay.

“We got the experience as a whole to know what it’s like to compete,” said dance team member MaKayla Sanchez.

Now, there is no rest for the dancers, as they look forward to another competition on April 30: the Inferno Dance Competition.

“We got some things to work on like our timing, make sure we all stay together, and look really good,” stated Sierra Sanchez.

The Studio B Dance Academy Competition Team includes Maylei Holmstead (12 yrs old), Melanie Fisher (15 yrs old), Alexa Villezcas (11 yrs old), Sierra Sanchez (15 yrs old), MaKayla Sanchez (11 yrs old). Owner and Director Brianna Waite along with Teacher and Office Admin. Taylor Asay leads the competition team.

Another event coming up for the team is the Competition Team Tryouts. The tryouts are open to new team members and will take place on May 22, from 9 am-1 pm at the Old Overton Gym located at 179 S. Andersen Street on the campus of Mack Lyon Middle School in Overton.

“We are so thankful for everyone who has supported us and for the parents in putting so much time and financial cost into their kids and the team,” stated Waite. “We are excited for the next competition and bringing a whole new competitive ‘sport’ to Moapa Valley.”
