Public Meetings To Be Held For Downwinders

The Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program clinic from St. George Regional Hospital will be holding public informational meetings in in communities of southern Nevada and northern Arizona on May 6-8.

These meetings are to inform the public that the RECA law is set to expire in July 2022.
The term “Downwinder” has been used to describe the more than 60,000 people who were exposed to radioactive fallout across northern Arizona, southern Nevada and southern Utah during the nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site.

Local residents are encouraged to attend to have their questions answered about the program and its requirements. Information will be given about the RECA compensation ($50,000 for qualifying downwinders) and its scheduled expiration. Applications and information will be available to get anyone who qualifies started on the compensation process.

The first meeting will be held on Thursday, May 6 in Alamo, NV Annex at 121 Joshua Tree Street from 6-7 pm.

The next meeting will be Friday, May 7 in Littlefield, AZ District Boardroom, 3490 E. Rio Virgin Rd, 2:00-3:00pm.

A meeting will be held on Friday, May 7 in Mesquite, NV at the Library Conference Rm 160 W. First North St. from 4:30-5:30pm.

On Saturday, May 8 at 10-11 am a meeting will be held in the Bunkerville Community Center at 150 W. Virgin Street.

A second meeting will be held on Saturday, May 8 in the Moapa Community & Rec Ctr at 1340 E. State Highway 168 from 1-2 pm.

Finally, on Saturday, May 8 at 3-4 pm, a meeting will be held in Moapa Valley Community Center at 320 N. Moapa Blvd in Overton.

Qualifying cancers include: Leukemia, Multiple Myeloma, Lymphomas, other than Hodgkin’s. Primary cancers of the: Pharynx, small intestine, salivary gland, brain, stomach, urinary bladder, colon, thyroid, pancreas, female or male breast, esophagus, bile ducts, liver, gall bladder, lung and ovary.

Social distancing requirements will be followed. Please wear a face covering (masks will be available).

Dear Ted my step grand fathers was one of the many Marines that dug trenches and were ordered to duck and cover your eyes when the nuclear bomb was set off at the testing sites in Nevada close to us in the 50s I believe he died of cancer and we always thought it was due to his horrible exposure to nuclear radiation . It caught up to him later in life. Unbelievable how they used these brave men as Guinea pigs were test results.
