Candi Kennedy with her dog Jackson; and Penny Gillian with her dog Benji; were happy to explore the new BARK! Canine Club facility at an open house event on Saturday. The all-new BARK! Canine Club & Resort opened its temporary Doggie Day Care Center with a special open house held Saturday, May 15. The 36,000 square foot facility is located at 355 W. Mesquite Boulevard, Suite F-10 in Brickyard Plaza and it is open for business.

“Our 14-acre (permanent) facility will not be ready to open before September,” said BARK! owner Susan Hunter at the Saturday morning event. “But we wanted the doggies to have a cool place to be during the hot summer months.”

There was plenty of community interest in the new facility, both from canines and their human owners. Most of the doggie moms and dads brought their furry loved ones with them to the event to check things out. They were getting their questions answered by Hunter or members of her staff that were all on hand to greet guests.

This facility will offer full- and half-day care. The cost for a full day of care is $29.00. Half day is $19.00. BARK! is also offering club memberships at a discounted rate until the permanent resort is complete.

Along with the daycare at the temporary location, BARK! is offering dog training programs as well as agility classes. They have also teamed up with Wiggle-Wiggle Mobile Dog Grooming, while in these temporary quarters, for their customers convenience.

“I am so excited about this,” said local dog owner Marge Hood. “My dog is coming for daycare on Tuesday.”

Wade Hughes, owner of Hot Iron Construction Company which has been contracted to build the permanent facility, was there wearing a BARK! shirt.
“I am happy and excited for my company to be building this K-9 Resort,” Hughes said.

Hughes said that he is working with Susan and Mark Hunter to transform the 14-acres near Star Nursery into a fun, safe, and spacious learn/play/stay resort just for dogs.

Susan and Mark Hunter moved to Mesquite recently after 20-years of visiting from Indiana. Mark retired from Amtrak and Susan sold her law firm. They brought their two dogs Wilbur and Wrigley.

The idea of the indoor dog park came when they found it so challenging to exercise their dogs during the hot summer months. Their solution will be the indoor dog park with many amenities which they are offering to the whole community.

“We were overwhelmed at the turnout this morning,” Hunter said. “We stayed busy all day. We are grateful for the response we are getting from the city and so many of its people.”

  1. My Dog Penny went for half day on Tuesday and had a great time. I am so excited to see this coming to Mesquite. I hope the City of Mesquite will continue to move forward on the development of the new site.
