The Progress
The winds calmed down on Thursday evening just in time for residents to enjoy the City of Mesquite Family Fun Night.
“It was touch and go for a while,” said Mesquite Recreation Superintendent Zach Robison. “We did make some last-minute adjustment to the evening events.”
Old Mill Park was buzzing with people with smiling faces, all happy to be at an outdoor community activity without masks on. There were plenty of free games for the youngsters to play including cornhole, shooting for baskets, throwing footballs through target holes, and more. But by far the most amusing and the most popular activity was the mechanical bull ride.
The Fire Department made a big hit by letting the kids spray water from a fire hose at a target. In doing this, they had the help of firefighter/paramedic April Le Baron.
The Mesquite Police Department was there with their mobile Command Center open for inspection by the youngsters and their parents.
The aroma from the food trucks Smoke N Grind, Tacos and Salsa, and the Corn Dog Company enticed attendees to try something, and these vendors remained busy through the evening.
Live band MESA was playing for everyone’s enjoyment. The children were squealing with delight when they won a prize at the games.
”We came out to enjoy the evening and a community event,” said City Councilwoman Sandra Ramaker.
Ramaker was even seen with her head sticking through the target hole on one of the ball toss games.
“This was a successful event, we estimated over 700 people attended,” said Robison. “We were not sure we could host something like this due to COVID, but fortunately the proper channels approved it just a few weeks ago.”
Robison expressed appreciation to all the organizations that helped staff all the fun games. These included Mesquite Senior Games, Virgin Valley Artist Association, Virgin River Coalition, Kokopelli ATV Club. Reliance Connects, The Elks Lodge, RAISE Mesquite, The Mesquite Showgirls, MEs and the Women’s History Center.
“We had a great turnout, and it would not be possible without the support of our community and the relationships we have with the various organizations in town,” said Robison.”
A prize drawing was held at 8 pm and, thanks to the donations from the local business, some became lucky winners.
Eureka Casino Resort donated several $25 gift cards, A buffet dinner for four and a $100 gift certificate to Gregory’s Restaurant.
Rising Star Sports Ranch donated several gift bags for the kids with a $25.00 gift card for McDonalds in them.
Mesquite Gaming donated several hats, polo shirts, A windbreaker, golf balls, And one free round of golf.
The Recreation Center gave 2 gift baskets with T-shirts hats, mugs and a one-month membership.
