The Progress
An early morning service to honor fallen military servicemen took place at the Veterans Memorial Park in Mesquite on Monday, May 31. The annual flagraising ceremony began at 8:00 am.
Area residents turned out in force to the event. “I think this is the largest crowd we have ever had,” said Mesquite Mayor Al Litman. “I am pleased, we will set-up more chairs next year.”
It was a short but very respectful service. The Honor Guard was on duty to present arms. The flag was lowered to half-staff and taps was played. A memorial wreath was placed by Mesquite Fire Chief Jayson Andrus. Mesquite resident Dennis Hangey performed music on his bagpipes to honor the fallen heroes.
Litman directed the ceremony and gave a short speech. “This is a solemn day, not a day for parades,” Litman said. “Today we are honoring the fallen vets not the ones who survived. That is done on Veterans Day.”
Litman introduced Lieutenant Colonel Janet MacDonald, from the Mesquite Elks Club who sang the National Anthem. MacDonald also sang a touching Trace Atkins Song entitled “Arlington.”
Attendees at the event were appreciative of the opportunity to bring the city together to reflect on those who have gave their lives for American freedom.
“It is my duty to the men and women who gave their lives for us, that I be here to honor them,” said local resident Sandi Sorensen.
The Service was well attended by veterans, the Mesquite Police Department and Fire Department and the many family members of the fallen.
The Elks Club provided burritos to all after the Service was over.
