Students at Virgin Valley High School celebrated the first weekend of the school year with an Opening Social event held on Firday, Aug. 13 at the Mesquite Rec Center outdoor pool.

The swimming and socializing fun night was organized by the VVHS Student Council and others that were willing to help.

There was pizza and snow cones being served for whoever wanted them. Many kids enjoyed going down the slide, going off the diving board, playing basketball, swimming, and spending time with friends. The Opening Social got students involved and excited for the school year.

The high school students had their first day back to school on Monday, August 9. They were excited to finally go back to school. But after the pandemic year they were still uncertain what the school year will have in store for them: what will be allowed, and what will not.

In order to get the kids back in action, the school week started with “Rush Week.” This was an opportunity for each club and sport to display a table where they could promote their activities for the coming school year. This gave an opportunity for kids to find out about all of the upcoming activities in one location.

With this and many other openine week activities going on, many of the students in attendance on Friday night, agreed that it was great going back to school and seeing their teachers and friends.

“My favorite part about the first week of school was getting to see friends I haven’t seen in awhile and getting to see teachers I haven’t seen since sophomore year!” said VVHS senior Abby Sonnenberg.

Avery Somerville, a VVHS junior, agreed. “I loved seeing everyone back in person!” she said. “It’s so different being able to talk to everyone face to face rather than through a screen.”

After making it through the first week the students are glad for the chance to get back to in-class education. There were many comments made by students as well as teachers about how an education is so much more than just learning from books. School provides the chance to learn from others through interaction. Virgin Valley is looking forward to making the most of this year.
