Registration Now Open For ‘Legs4Lexi’ Tournament

By NICK YAMASHITA

The Progress

The Legs4Lexi Charity Golf Tournament will help pay medical treatment expenses for Lexi Winslow.

The annual Legs4Lexi Charity Golf Tournament will return this year after a pandemic hiatus on Saturday, October 23 at the Coyote Willows Golf Course. Registration will start at 7:30 am and the shotgun start is at 8:30 am.

This will be the 3rd tournament to benefit Mesquite youth Lexi Winslow, who has advanced stage cerebral palsy and requires constant treatments and therapy.

The tournament is a $75 buy-in for 18 holes including a golf cart and lunch. Besides the 2-person scramble, there is also a putting contest in which the winner of both the women’s and men’s divisions will win a putter club worth approximately $150.

Mindy Winslow, mother of Lexi and also co-coordinator of the event, was excited to see the tournament taking place again this year. “It is just great to be able to have people come and see Lexi,” Mindy said. “She loves the event and being a part of it.”

Joe and Mindy Winslow, parents of Lexi, came to Mesquite 12 years ago from Las Vegas. Joe is the insurance agent for American Family in the Virgin and Moapa Valleys. Mindy is also certified and helps out with the insurance agency.

The couple has two daughters, Lexi and Ellie, both of whom have cerebral palsy. But Lexi is at a more advanced stage of the disease than Ellie.

Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder caused by a non-progressive brain injury or malformation that occurs while the child’s brain is under development. It primarily affects body movement and muscle coordination.

Patients must receive ongoing therapy. Mindy takes her girls to treatments in St. George, UT twice a week. But three times per year the girls are taken to Houston, TX for intensive therapy.

“We did a lot of research and found two places that offer these types of services,” Mindy said. “One was in Salt Lake City and the other in Houston. The one in Salt Lake City was much more expensive, even with travel.”

So three times a year, the family travels to Houston for 3 weeks of treatment. The cost of these trips has been staggering.

“The intensive therapy in Houston is kind of like a 1-on-1 football camp,” said Mindy. “They do strengthening, standing, walking. They do 3 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 3 weeks.”

Lexi attends JL Bowler Elementary and she loves going to school. She became the “granddaughter” of everyone at Coyote Willows when the Winslows lived in that area. The local people, especially at the golf course, wanted to help the Winslows out with the costs of the therapy.

“They absolutely fell in love with Lexi,” said Mindy. “I am so grateful for the community at Coyote Willows and everyone in Mesquite for all of their support and help.”

Past tournaments were able to raise about $10,000 which helps cut a huge chunk of the medical costs. This year, there are a couple of things different.

“In the past, the tournament was only 9 holes and the entry fee was about $40,” Mindy explained. “This year Marcus at Coyote Willows made plans and set it up to be an 18 Hole Tournament with a putting contest, raffle, and silent auction as well.”

The tournament registration begins with only 80 spots open. They also have a raffle with some great prizes, including a golf bag, golf clubs, a Condo/Timeshare stay in Costa Rica (airfare not included), and more. The silent auction’s main item is a Limited Edition Nike Golf Bag with Club autographed by PGA golfer Russell Henley.

The Winslows are also still looking for businesses to sponsor holes at $100 a hole. In return they have a 15×15 sign at the hole to advertise the business. Donations for the raffle and silent auction are still being taken too.

  1. The same issue that this article appeared in also had an article about the Golf Star Bryson DeChambeau coming to Mesquite for the PLDA Long Drive Championship Sept 28..

It occurred to me a perfect match; in the sense of his being an Official Ambassador for Shriners Childrens Hospitals and a former Champion of their Tournament in Las Vegas Oct 6, which he is scheduled to be in.

He has a website: brysondechambeau.com and perhaps his team, agent or Foundation might be interested in the legs4lexi story.

I’m a cousin; former small time golf pro and retired senior in Mesquite.
