Man Arrested for Drugs, Illegal Firearm, & Stolen Property

David Bird

On September 4, 2021 at approximately 5:00 a.m. a Mesquite police officer observed a vehicle parked near a business in an area not usually accessible to the public. Officers approached the vehicle and immediately observed an adult male in the driver’s seat along with several indicators he was involved in criminal activity.

Officers had the man exit the vehicle to conduct their investigation. A search of his person and vehicle revealed he was in possession of an illegally modified sawed-off shotgun, 19.5 grams of methamphetamine, 5.5 grams of heroin, multiple stolen tools from a St. George (Utah) business, and various items of drug paraphernalia.

The driver, David Stewart Bird, 30, of St George, Utah, was arrested and charged with ex-felon in possession of firearm, felony possession of modified firearm, felony possession of stolen property, felony possession of methamphetamine, felony possession of heroin, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

Due to the felony charges, he was transported to the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Chief MaQuade Chesley said “Proactive police work is so much more than just traffic stops. Mesquite officers are frequently checking both residential and commercial areas for criminal activity to keep Mesquite as safe as possible. The dedication and attentiveness of these officers interrupted this suspect’s criminal activity before other crimes were committed, and once again helped solve crimes committed both in Mesquite and Utah.”
