OBITUARY: Margaret Humes

Margaret Humes

Margaret Humes

Margaret Humes passed away August 25, 2021. She was born February 8, 1954 in Jakarta, Indonesia to Willy and Constance Wessels. At the age of 1 the family moved to the Netherlands and took up residence there until 1959 at which time the opportunity arose to move to America. In November of 1959 Willy and Connie loaded up the seven children and moved to America eventually settling in LaPuente, California.

Margaret, then 5, was confident that when she arrived it would be all cowboys and Indians, but she was introduced to New York City.

Margaret was active and popular throughout her school years and up to the time of her passing remained very close to many of her classmates. Not long after her graduation she married Blair Gregory and they started a family, that grew to include 4 children: Levi, Blair, Chris, and Ricky. The marriage would end in divorce and Margaret would become a single mother.

It was during this time that Margaret came into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Now with a family she was no longer comfortable living in the world and the lusts of it and hungered for something more real. She found that peace, joy, and comfort in Jesus Christ and she accepted Jesus into her life as her Savior and put complete trust in Him for the rest of her life; A life which reaped an abundance of fruit for Christ and will continue to do so even after her passing.

In the fall of 1980 Margaret met Bruce Humes and they fell in love and married on May 23, 1981. This marriage would increase the number of children in the family to 6, as Bruce brought with him 2 children: Torrie and Eric.

Work would take the family to Southern Nevada and for the next 22 years they would reside in Logandale Nevada. There Margaret remained busy being a mother and wife but found work being a pre-school teacher. For 12 years she worked for “Classroom on Wheels” or “C.O.W.” a non-profit free pre-school and it was something she truly loved. She looked forward each year to a new group of children, and loved them.

After retirement and the family pretty much grown and out of the house, Margaret and Bruce decided to move to Southern California. This decision was readily accepted by Margaret for she really never acclimated to the summer heat and for her it was an answer to prayer. She made the statement at the time of the move “22 years here is enough.” She was anxious to get out of the heat and excited to be moving back to Southern California to be near her mother, family and friends. So in August of 2008 after God literally opened the door they moved to Seal Beach and settled in the retirement community of Leisure World. It was difficult leaving so many close friends, but was exciting to see what God had in store for them.

Margaret quickly settled in and got involved with many of Leisure World’s service clubs. She had a servants heart and took great joy in caring for and serving others. She also loved to dance and was part of many dance groups. She and Bruce found a solid bible teaching church and began a new phase in their life together.

Margaret is survived by her husband Bruce; her mother Connie Wessels; 4 children: Levi (Lisa) Gregory, Blair Gregory, Chris (Sherilyn) Gregory, and Eric (Elizabeth) Humes; 6 siblings: Barbara Robinson, Rick Wessels, Annette (Joe) Domaracki, Phillip (Debbie) Wessels, Marja Stoll, and Dave (Laura) Wessels; 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father Willy; her son Ricky and daughter Torrie; and beloved sister-in-law Judy Wessels, who passed the same day after a long battle with cancer.

Margaret was full of love, and that love overflowed in abundance to the family and her friends. She will be missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 2pm in Leisure World Seal Beach, California. The venue will be Clubhouse 4.

  1. Margaret was one of my most FAVORITE people EVER! She was always so kind and nurturing to the Howard and Helgren children. Our families were close during my childhood, through the First Assembly of God Church. We went through Pastor Stone, Pastor Billy and Pastor Dunovant together.

I remember going to her home and swimming a lot during the hit summer days. Miss Margaret ALWAYS had snacks and love for us.

I am saddened to be writing this message, but I know that she is with her Lord and Saviour, whom she loved and devout so much.

To the family, Bruce and Boys, I am so sorry for this heartache and loss. My prayers and condolences are with you at this time.

Miss Margaret, I love you, you were always one of my favorites. Rest peacefully.

  2. O my sweet Ms. Margaret I am so lost with words. We shared so many awesome memories. You showed me so much in my life that I will never forget. I always wished I could have just half of your energy and spunk. Your love for Jesus is amazing and his light just radiant through you for all to see. You will be missed but never forgotten. Love you and rest now. See you soon.

  3. Bruce,

I’m just finding out about Margaret’s graduation to heaven now. Oh this hurts. I miss her even though we didn’t stay in touch that much. Margaret was such a bright light, always positive and focused on heavenly things. I’m just devastated that this stupid disease could take her away. But I know she is with Jesus. I will see her again.
