VFW Post 8336 Celebrates Diamond Jubilee Anniversary

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Elwood Perkins Post 8336 celebrated the post’s 75th “Diamond Jubilee” anniversary on Saturday, September 18, VFW officials from across the region came to the VFW Post Home in Overton to celebrate the event with local veterans in a ceremony and lunch featuring an anniversary cake.

During a short ceremony, VFW Department of Nevada Commander Ed Sturges presented a certificate of achievement from the national Commander-in-Chief Fritz Mihelcic to the VFW Post 8336 Commander Sterling Akers.

“The members of the VFW Post 8336 are pillars of support for Moapa Valley,” Sturges said. “Year after year, you have brought a spirit of service to others. You have provided a valuable network of services to those who have borne the battle as well as to their families. And you have advanced the health and well-being of those who bear the burden of defending our nation and our way of life.”

Elwood Perkins Post 8336 was chartered on September 19, 1946, by combat veterans who had returned home from overseas deployment during World War II.

The veterans on the original charter include names like Perkins, Riggs, Leavitt, Lewis, Cooper, Dailey. These were members of long established families in the Moapa Valley area. These veterans agreed to name the post after Elwood Perkins who was killed on October 10, 1944 in France. Elwood was a cousin or brother to four of the charter members.
