Bulldogs Planning Full Homecoming Week

By AMY DAVIS

The Progress

2019 was the last time a Homecoming Parade was held on Mesquite Blvd. The tradition will return next week as a community-sponsored event. Organizers are looking for local businesses and organizations to show support and put an entry into the parade.

Virgin Valley High School will be celebrating its Homecoming Week next week from Oct. 11-16. The “High School Musical” themed week of festivities begins with various dress-up days at school, includes a parade down the main street, and ends with the big Homecoming game and a dance.

Plans for the parade were still in the works last week. The big downtown event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 13 beginning at 6 pm along Mesquite Blvd.

An invitation for the Grand Marshal of the 2021 Homecoming Parade has been extended, but no final word had been heard by The Progress press deadline on whether the honor had been accepted. More will be available on that later.

Due to CCSD COVID restrictions, the Parade is not sponsored by the school itself. Instead it is community-hosted. Businesses are desperately needed for float participation. Those interested in supporting this homecoming celebration may contact Malia McOmie at 435-668-1065 or Lydia Wakefield at 702-815-5182. As of this edition’s publication, not a single business had signed up to participate in the Parade.

Each day of Homecoming Week has a different theme within the halls of VVHS. For example on Monday, the theme of the day is “The Boys are Back.” Students are encouraged to wear Bulldog attire. There will also be a drive-in movie at the school at 7 P.M.

Tuesday’s theme is “Fabulous Fancy attire”. A “pink out” will be observed at the girls’ soccer game which begins at 4:30 P.M.

On Wednesday, the theme will be “Bop to the Top” Decade’s day with the downtown parade starting at 5 P.M.

On Thursday it is “We’re all in this Together” Squad Day with a “Beach Out” clothing attire at the Girls’ Volleyball game starting at 7 P.M.

Friday’s theme will be “Getcha Head in the Game” with a “White Out” attire for the football game at 7 pm. A tailgate party will start at 5 pm
“The High School Musical theme actually plays into our school theme for the year, which is ‘The Dawgs are Back’,” said Tyra Ludvigson, junior SBO Officer.

Travis Terry, the junior SBO secretary said, “This is our first time planning a dance!” The SBO was too young to plan a dance before the COVID pandemic began last year. So with this being their first experience, the student leaders don’t really know the difference between a pre-COVID dance and a post-COVID dance, Terry said. “It just feels normal,” he said.

VVHS Assistant Principal Stephen Waite, who oversees activities at the school said, “It is so nice to have the kids back in school and planning things. It is good to have some sense of normalcy again.”

“We are especially grateful for the community because they are really taking the brunt load of the dance and the parade,” Waite added. “CCSD still has a lot of COVID restrictions, so they stepped up and are doing things that we can’t. If it wasn’t for parents and student council, this would not be happening. We have the best community!”

Lydia Wakefield, a senior and head of the dance committee SBO, explains, “We can do so much more for homecoming if it is hosted by the community instead of the school. We hope this is the first of 5 or 6 community hosted dances.”

There is an Instagram page (and a Facebook page coming soon) called “virgin.valley.bc” where information about upcoming dances and information on how to help will be posted.

“If I could make just points,” Wakefield said, “it would be that, number one, we need business to sign up to be in the parade or it will be a very short parade with only floats from the high school. Number two, we need help with funding and volunteering for future dances from the community.”

Those interested in helping can send a message through Instagram or may email virginvalleybc@gmail.com or call McOmie or Wakefield at the numbers listed above.
