Youth Waterfowl Hunters Invited For Ducks & Donuts

Youth hunters and their mentors are invited to join staff from the Nevada Department of Wildlife for the 3rd Annual Ducks & Donuts event at the youth waterfowl hunt slated for Saturday, Oct. 23 at Overton Wildlife Management Area.

There is no charge for the event, which will include prize drawings, a post-hunt pancake breakfast and duck calls for all youth hunters while the supply lasts. Since Ducks & Donuts is held in conjunction with the youth waterfowl hunt, participants should plan on an early morning. NDOW staff and event supporters will begin serving donuts and warm beverages at 4 a.m. near the WMA check station.

The early start time is necessary to accommodate the mandatory check-in time of 1½ hours before legal shooting time. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 1-855-542-6369 starting at 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 18.

To participate in the youth waterfowl hunt, hunters must be 17 years of age or younger and accompanied by an adult who is at least 18 years of age. Only the youth hunters are permitted to harvest birds. A hunting license is required for those who are 12 years of age and older, and those 16 and over also need a federal waterfowl stamp.

Among the prizes to be given away is a shotgun donated by event sponsor Armscor-Rock Island Armory of Pahrump. Other event sponsors include the Las Vegas Woods and Waters Club, Wildlife and Habitat Improvement of Nevada (WHIN), Bass Pro Shops, Coot’s Taxidermy, and Hy-Rock.

“Even though it is an early morning, each of us enjoys doing what we can to make this a memorable event for youth and their mentors,” said Martin Olson, Southern Region Hunter Education coordinator for NDOW. “This youth hunt is a great opportunity for an adult to introduce a youth to the tradition of hunting and teach them about the important role hunting has long played in the conservation movement.”

For more information, hunters or their mentors can call 702-486-5127.
