Virgin Valley High School celebrated its Homecoming last week. It was a week full of fun with plenty of activities to get all of the students involved and excited. The VVHS student council planned daily activities in the school’s central quad area during lunch. And there were multiple after school activities in the afternoons and evenings..

Wednesday night, Oct. 13 was the traditional Homecoming Parade. The energy was high, and the candy was plentiful as hundreds of community members gathered along Mesquite Boulevard for this community celebration.

As with most big events, the parade wasn’t without a little chaos. As late as Tuesday, there were concerns that there wouldn’t be much of a parade to watch.

“The night before the parade, we only had 7 floats signed up,” said VVHS senior Lydia Wakefield, the Student Body Officer in charge of the Homecoming Committee. “But by the morning of the parade, 32 floats had signed up. It was really stressful pulling it all together, but it turned out awesome!

One float was designated especially for homecoming royalty nominees. Emma Hughes Senior Student Body Vice President was one of those nominees.

Hughes said that planning the event had been no easy task. “Today was super busy,” she said. “It was go, go, go all day long. We didn’t have a lot of people signed up to be a part of the parade and that was really stressful, but it always comes together how it is supposed to be and this was good. It was such a perfect night.”

Each class was in charge of decorating a float. Tyra Ludvigson, junior class president, said their float was decorated in a “decades” theme to go along with the spirit day they were in charge of during Homecoming Spirit Week.

“This was so much fun, I love this parade!” Ludvigson said. “The kids were so cute. It was so fun to throw the little footballs to the crowd because their faces would just light up.”

Ludvigson added that just getting together with the community was rewarding and exciting. “We have been locked out for so long it is just so awesome to be back again,” she said. “Our theme at the high school this year is ‘the Dogs are back’ and it really is so good to be back.”

Immediately after the parade a favorite activity for many students was planned on the VVHS football field. “My favorite part of homecoming week was probably the powderpuff game,” said VVHS junior Hailey Villenga.

In this classic gender-bending event, the junior and senior girls take to the football field for a game of flag football. Meanwhile the boys took on the role of cheerleaders and drill team. In the end, the senior girls ended up winning the game over the junior class team with a score of 12-6.

On Thursday night was the girls volleyball game against their rival Moapa. The game was full of hype on both sides, bringing a great crowd. Although losing to Moapa, the team played a good game and had a lot of fun. The homecoming volleyball game was also a beach-out theme which brought many students dressed up and hyped for the game.

Friday’s dress up day was a white out. There was a fun assembly at the end of the day with a lot of students involved. The assembly featured a tug of war, and the school’s drill team and cheer team performed. There were also other fun games.

The assembly led to the start of the rest of the day. There was a tailgate party before the game. Then it was game time with the Bulldogs dominating the visiting Western Warrior team. After the game everyone went to the stomp which provided music and place where students could see and talk to friends.

On Saturday night was the Homecoming Dance. Many students spent the day on dates with friends and enjoying their time together.
“My favorite part of this week was the day date and the dance,” said VVHS junior Neil Anderson. “My group went to the Valley of Fire and went rock climbing.”

The dance started at 8:00 pm that night and went until 11:00. It was hosted by the Rising Star Resort and the students were grateful for the resort’s willingness to host the dance.

One of the activities this week was voting for homecoming royalty. The winners for each class was announced at the Homecoming game on Friday night. The freshman princess was Asia Cannon and the prince was Mason Montoya. The sophomore princess was Kaedence Reed and the prince was Romulis Gagliano. For the juniors, it was Mersadee Corley as princess and Isaac Flores Cortes as Prince. And finally, the overall winner for homecoming queen and king was Alicia Hermosillo and Edgar Perez.
