The Progress
In their effort to keep our waters clean, the Virgin River Coalition organized a Virgin River Clean-up Day which was held on Thursday Oct 21. Volunteers gathering that afternoon at Hafen Park in Mesquite.
The Rotary Club of Mesquite and the Kokopelli ATV Clubs helped in these efforts with many of their members volunteering.
Virgin River Coalition coordinator Lynn Benell began by welcomed the volunteers. Each was provided with trash bags and gloves to equip them for the project.
The clean-up was scheduled to go between 3-5pm. And as a thank you, Benell arranged for the Mesquite Firefighters Association to grill up some hamburgers and hotdogs at Hafen Park for the volunteers to enjoy right as the clean up ended.
Kris and Steve Dorsey were first time volunteers. They are new residents to Mesquite from Wyoming.
“We saw the event publicized online and came to help,” Steve said.
Benell emphasized the importance of these types of projects. “Keeping the riverbanks clean of debris keeps the ‘urban slobber’ out of our waters,” she said, using a term meaning pollution caused by drains and gutters from urban neighborhoods.
On Wednesday evening, Oct. 27 at 6 pm, the Virgin River Coalition will present the 4th and final lecture in a series of presentations given about the Virgin River. This week’s lecture will be entitled “Recreation and our Watershed” and will be presented by Nicholas Montoya, Director of Mesquite Athletics and Leisure Services Department. The lecture will take place in the City Council Chamber at Mesquite City Hall.
