The Progress
Representatives from the Overton Power District #5 (OPD5) presented checks to administrators of the two high schools within the OPD5 service territory during a brief ceremony held at the rivalry football game between Virgin Valley and Moapa Valley high schools on Friday, Oct. 22 in Logandale.
The checks were presented in a brief moment’s pause just after the first period of the game.
On the Virgin Valley side of the field, OPD5 Public Affairs specialist Keith Buchhalter presented a check for $2,946.93 to VVHS Assistant Principal Stephen Waite.
Meanwhile, on the Moapa Valley sidelines, OPD5 Engineering manager Randall Ozaki presented a check made out in the amount of $2,678.33 to MVHS Athletic Director Dallas Larsen.
The checks constituted the proceeds from the Round Up for Education fundraising program which OPD5 oversees and administers for the local schools.
In its ninth year, Round Up For Education allows OPD5 customers to sign up to have their power bills rounded up to the nearest dollar each month. When they sign up, the customer also specifies which school they want their donations to benefit. The difference then becomes a monthly small-change donation for their specified school. All of the funds raised in the program are presented in a check each year to the local schools.
The funds are used at the discretion of the local schools in what they feel best helps their student body. It does not become a restricted part of the CCSD budget allotment to the school.
Signing up for the Round Up for Education program is simple. OPD5 customers can simply call the OPD5 office at 702-397-2512 in Overton, or at 702-346-5710 in Mesquite or stop by the local office in person to start Rounding Up.
